About Mateo

Matéo was born out of a simple need: a better way to caffeinate.

Founded by former chef Olie Ford, it was originally created for long shifts at work. After years spent in South America where he was drawn to yerba mate, an ingredient with deep roots. What stuck wasn’t just the tradition, but the feeling: long-lasting, steady energy, a clearer head, and none of the usual downsides of coffee or energy drinks. No crash. No anxious edge. The kind of drink shift workers wish existed.

Back in Melbourne, on a 40°C January day Olie set out to make cold, refreshing versions that were easy to take to work. He’d seen iced yerba mate everywhere in Paraguay, and that sparked the idea. At first it was simple: unflavoured and non-carbonated. Then came the fruit, different herbs, and eventually the fizz.

That’s when it clicked. This wasn’t just a coffee alternative, it was something you’d reach for in its own right. For the middle of a long day when it’s too late for another coffee. At work or on a road trip. For feel-good social moments when you're not drinking.

The result is a drink that feels honest, refreshing, and genuinely different. A modern and convenient take on a tradition he loved.

Natural energy for the outdoors and indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Matéo sugar free?
Our original Matéo is completely sugar free. Our ginger contains less than 1g of sugar coming only from fresh ginger and lemon juice. Our hibiscus flavour contains less than 1g of sugar coming only from raspberry.
What is L-Theanine?
L-Theanine is an amino acid naturally occurring in green tea. When combined with caffeine it helps offset anxiousness. We add it to our drinks to further enhance the feeling of relaxed alertness that yerba mateé provides.
Is Matéo alcoholic?
Nope but it certainly mixes well with tequila, mezcal or vodka if you’re that way inclined.
How do I become a stockist?
We’d love to hear from you. hello@mateosoda.com
How many calories are we talking?
Next to none. Less than 10 calories per 330ml bottle.
Who can drink Matéo?
Anyone can drink matéo, although it’s not recommended for lactating or pregnant people.
When should i drink one?
It's a versatile companion really. You can drink one to quench your thirst on a hot day. You can drink one with a nice meal. You can drink one to power you through something physically or mentally challenging. You can have one if you're at a party and not drinking, or you can have one as a coffee alternative. We're not at all telling you to ditch your morning coffee. We do suggest you have one instead of that second coffee though. It'll get you through the whole day without a crash.
WHAT IS ERYTHRITOL?
Erythritol is a completely natural sweetener found in grapes, watermelon and corn. We use it to offset the natural bitterness of yerba maté without using sugar.
